Sandie's feeling on top of the world
Published on: 09 May 2005
Feeling on top of the world came true for a manager at a local business services firm who completed a gruelling six day trek for charity to the summit of the world's highest free-standing mountain.
With three months' specialist fitness training behind her, Sandie Williams from Whiteley based insolvency and business rescue specialists Portland Business & Financial Solutions, tramped through tropical rainforests, over mountain moorland and icy wastes without extra oxygen, to scale the summit of Tanzania's Mt. Kilimanjaro, 19,344ft, to raise money for The British Heart Foundation, Macmillan Nurses and The Stroke Association.
Sandie, who lives in Totton, said: "Our ascent to the summit began at midnight and we finally made it at 7.45am in a heavy snowstorm which froze our clothing and even our eyelashes but the descent was the toughest part for everyone because it had to be rapid and tiredness increased the risk of falling. Sliding down the scree on the way down was like skiing on rock but without the skis! To get through I had to plumb reserves of energy and determination I never knew I had but getting to the top was fantastic."
Portland's Managing Director, Carl Faulds, said: "Sandie has been a valued member of the Portland team for over twenty years; whether scaling mountains or dealing with a client in difficult circumstances she always gives her best and we are very proud of her magnificent achievement and are pleased to support her fundraising."
Sandie's sponsorship from family, friends, colleagues and members of the south's business community stands at over £3300 and anyone who would like to contribute can contact her at sandie.williams@portland-solutions.co.uk Ends
