Being involved in charity is 'awarding'

Mike Fortune, Director of Poole-based Portland Business Recovery says more businesses should get involved in supporting Charities if they want to be successful.
Mike, a trustee of Julia's House, a hospice for life-limited children based in Poole, Dorset, said: "The management team at Julia's House recently won 'Best Management Team' at the annual Dorset Business Awards and being involved with the charity has been a great business-learning experience. Not only do you see the work of the charity first hand and the results they achieve, but you also see the effort that goes in behind the scenes and putting the two things together can be very inspirational."
"When you're running your own business it is easy to become so focused on your own little empire that you forget to look at the wider picture. Being involved with a charity, which has a different set of values and goals and a completely different perspective, can actually improve the performance of your own business. It opens your eyes and underlines the really important values in life. The passion and commitment of the management team can also be inspiring, particularly if you have had a hard week in your own businesses. The beneficiaries of a charity rely on that charity, so to not constantly try your best is not an option; the management team has to keep going, whatever the circumstances."
Mike would recommend from his own personal experience that entrepreneurs find the time, not only once they have become successful, but also on their way up, to get involved in a local charity. It can be very rewarding and no matter what happens in your own business, you will know that your efforts have improved the environment in which you live.
