Portland in the Not For Profit Sector
Portland is active in the not for profit sector. It is not surprising that trustees of a charity in financial difficulty call upon our services:
- Our directors also act as trustees in personal capacities so they understand the pressures of running a charity on an honorary and often part time basis.
- Our approach ensures that these directors play a central role in the provision of our services so trustees have a real and capable "friend in need"
- We have a cost effective charging structure so that our fees provide good value for money in keeping with a charity's need to keep administration costs to a minimum
Portland directors have undertaken many assignments for non-profit organisations, particularly in the arts, educational, overseas aid and community support fields. In addition, Portland either supports or its directors are trustees of the following charities on an honorary basis.
- Portland supports South Coast Money Line through the provision without charge of the treasurer's time and accounting services. SCML (www.scmoneyline.org.uk) is a charity that provides the "financially excluded" in the Portsmouth area with access to more affordable credit and other financial services. Portland shares SCMLs' ethos and objectives of providing practical solutions for individuals and businesses in financial difficulty, albeit in a non-charitable context.
- Portland provides the services of the Treasurer of Solent Peoples Theatre on an honorary basis. SPT is a charity that uses theatre and other performing arts media as a means to enable local groups, often from disadvantaged backgrounds, to express themselves to the local community. SPT has had its own financial difficulties, having to react to the objectives of funders who have steadily withdrawn revenue funding because of budgetary constraints. The charity is currently in a "quiet" period as it reinvents itself as a community theatre company including a move to new premises in Portsmouth. We are currently helping SPT with the preparation of a business plan.
- A Portland director is a governor of a local independent school. He was instrumental in preparing the business plan to raise £2m to build a new junior school building and is currently working on a new plan for a new technical building.
- Portland directors have had roles helping the beneficiaries of Princes Youth Business Trust and Business in the Arts.
- Active involvement in the government of local sports clubs.
